Savute

Tucked into the western reaches of Chobe National Park, Savute is a land of striking contrasts—where dry, open savanna meets ancient marshland and the mysterious Savute Channel carves its way through the heart of the region. Known for its dramatic predator-prey interactions and rugged beauty, Savute is one of Botswana’s most iconic safari destinations.

This remote area boasts an impressive concentration of wildlife, particularly during the dry months when animals congregate around the few remaining waterholes. Large prides of lions, clans of hyenas, and sightings of cheetahs and wild dogs make Savute a hotspot for those eager to witness Africa's raw wilderness in action. The area’s elephant population is also significant, with bull elephants often seen wandering the plains or cooling off in the waterholes.

What sets Savute apart is its untamed feel and reputation for intense wildlife action. Game drives in Savute often turn up high drama—whether it’s lions stalking buffalo or hyenas challenging predators for a kill. The stark beauty of the landscape, punctuated by dead camelthorn trees and vast open plains, makes every moment feel cinematic.

For those interested in culture and history, Savute is also home to ancient San rock art, hidden away in the Gubatsa Hills, offering a fascinating glimpse into Botswana’s ancient heritage.

When to visit:

The best time to visit Savute is during the dry season, from May to October, when wildlife is easier to find and predator action is at its peak. This is also when the legendary zebra migration (Botswana’s longest) may be observed moving through the region—especially around November to December and again in February to March, depending on rains.

The wet season (November to April) transforms Savute into a green wonderland. While game viewing is still strong, particularly for elephants and birdlife, the roads can become challenging, and sightings more dispersed. However, fewer tourists and dramatic scenery make it an adventurous time to visit.
