Chobe Riverfront: The Elephant Capital of the World
Chobe Riverfront is one of the most iconic safari destinations in Botswana, renowned for its extraordinary elephant population. Located in the far northeast corner of the country, along the banks of the Chobe River, this area is home to over 120,000 elephants, making it one of the best places in Africa to see these magnificent creatures up close.
The riverfront itself is teeming with life, from crocodiles basking in the sun to herds of buffalo drinking at the river’s edge.
Chobe is best known for its incredible boat safaris, where visitors can drift silently along the river, offering a unique perspective of wildlife in their natural habitat. The river serves as a lifeline for animals during the dry season, and boat safaris allow you to see animals like elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of antelope species as they gather along the shores.
In addition to boat safaris, Chobe offers thrilling game drives in open 4x4 vehicles. The dense concentrations of wildlife make it a prime location for predator sightings, and the surrounding plains host an array of species, from zebras to lions. The stunning sunsets over the river also provide one of the most picturesque settings for a safari adventure.
When to visit:
The best time to visit Chobe is during the dry season, from May to October, when animals gather around water sources and less vegetation makes wildlife easier to spot.
Late September and October are very hot and are best avoided for people not fond of extreme heat.
However, the wet season (November to April) is a great time to visit to avoid this more touristy part of Botswana, although the game viewing is not quite what it is in the dry season.
